Rethinking My Beliefs about God Apart From Traditional Christianity

Is God A Mystery Or Not?

I used to complain that Christians (including myself) talked all about God as if we understood him yet we acted as though “he” is just some black box of a concept in the mind…. But then I realized that maybe that is exactly what God is supposed to be… a mystery… the “I am” with no ending and without a narrowed down definition.

It seems to me now that it is impossible to explain God because he is everything all at once and our finite mind cannot grasp all of that, let alone explain God within the context of a systematic theology. So now I complain when people try to define God.

On the other hand, it seems we all know God and we know him very intimately since he is the breath of our very breath. Within the context of our personal lives, such as birthing a child or singing a song, or driving a car… we are experiencing God. Somehow God is related to life.

Religion, of course, has attempted to hijack this truth, if religion is artificial life. I think this is why we are so confused about God. A mystery doesn’t need to be confusing. We just need to understand that although we can fully enjoy the clues, the real thing exists on a much grander scale
